Most states now have either early voting or mail-in voting and this year voters are showing up early in historical numbers. Most likely all states will have early voting in the future.

Early voting actually started as an absentee vote by mail to make it easier for the elderly and disabled to vote as well as people who had difficulty voting because of their work schedules. Because of the popularity of the absentee ballots, many states began enacting rules that no longer required an excuse to request to vote absentee.
